Homemade Playdough

Honestly, unless your kids constantly eat store bought playdough, after trying this once, you probably won't ever want to do it again. But if you need a project for a rainy afternoon, this will do the trick. The cream of tartar is not necessary but might help with shelf life as the finished dough doesn't last more than a day or two. For longer lasting results, keep it in a sealed ziploc in the fridge and bring to room temperature before use.

Total Time 12 minutes

Ingredients

  • 2 cups of AP flour
  • 1 cup kosher salt
  • 3 tablespoons cream of tartar (optional)
  • 2 tablespoons cooking oil
  • 1 cup boiling water
  • Food Coloring of your choice

Instructions

  1. Combine dry ingredients in a bowl.
  2. Pour boiling water over the top and stir with a spoon until combined and cool enough to handle.
  3. Knead dough until uniform and smooth, adding flour by the tablespoon if necessary.
  4. Divide into balls and using separate bowls, mix in as much food coloring as needed to make a brightly colored dough. Gloves are recommended if you have them.
  5. Alternately, and for the more ambitious sorts, after combining dry, divide into 3-4 equal portions. Divide hot water and coloring in an equal amount of small bowls then combine as above. This will make mixing in the color a little brighter and more consistent but also makes more of a mess.

Notes

Store finished dough wrapped in plastic, ideally in the fridge, to prolong use.
