Homemade Playdough
Honestly, unless your kids constantly eat store bought playdough, after trying this once, you probably won't ever want to do it again. But if you need a project for a rainy afternoon, this will do the trick. The cream of tartar is not necessary but might help with shelf life as the finished dough doesn't last more than a day or two. For longer lasting results, keep it in a sealed ziploc in the fridge and bring to room temperature before use.
Ingredients
- 2 cups of AP flour
- 1 cup kosher salt
- 3 tablespoons cream of tartar (optional)
- 2 tablespoons cooking oil
- 1 cup boiling water
- Food Coloring of your choice
Instructions
- Combine dry ingredients in a bowl.
- Pour boiling water over the top and stir with a spoon until combined and cool enough to handle.
- Knead dough until uniform and smooth, adding flour by the tablespoon if necessary.
- Divide into balls and using separate bowls, mix in as much food coloring as needed to make a brightly colored dough. Gloves are recommended if you have them.
- Alternately, and for the more ambitious sorts, after combining dry, divide into 3-4 equal portions. Divide hot water and coloring in an equal amount of small bowls then combine as above. This will make mixing in the color a little brighter and more consistent but also makes more of a mess.
Notes
Store finished dough wrapped in plastic, ideally in the fridge, to prolong use.
